Grow your own

In my mind, this is the best option because you can take full control over the foods you eat.

You’re probably not going to meet all of your needs growing your own food.

So start small perhaps by growing some herbs or vegetables.

Find your local farmers

Farmers Markets
  • NATIONAL FARMERS’ MARKET DIRECTORY
Search your area to find your local farmers’ markets.
  • CSA
Search for Community Supported Agriculture near you...
...where you sign up for a share of a farm’s produce that’s delivered to you on a regular basis.
  • LOCAL HARVEST
Local Harvest is a great resource for people in the United States who want to find local farmers to buy their food from directly. Their website has a directory of over 30,000 farms and farmers’ markets as well as restaurants and stores that sell local food. Each farm or company maintains its own listing so you can keep track of their offerings, specials, and events.
  • EAT WELL GUIDE: LOCAL, SUSTAINABLE, ORGANIC FOOD
Eat Well Guide is another directory to help you find locally grown food, but it’s not just limited to US farms – it includes listings in Canada. This site lists the normal farms, farmers’ markets, grocery stores, and restaurants... it also includes CSAs and orchards to provide you with even more options. Every listing in the Eat Well Guide offers sustainable, organic, humanely raised food so you know whatever you’re getting is good and good for you.
  • USWELLNESS
If you want pasture-raised, grass-fed meat, USWellness is the place to go. They’ve even done lab tests on their meat that has shown, time and again, that their meat has more important nutrients (like omega-3s, vitamins, CLAs) than grain-fed meat does. They offer beef, lamb, bison, and goat, grass-fed dairy, and free-range poultry.
  • HERITAGE FOODS USA
Heritage Foods offers heritage turkeys and has also expanded to raise cows, pigs, sheep, goats, and other poultry naturally, the way the animals would live in the wild. They also slaughter their animals seasonally, believing that animals are better in certain seasons just as produce is, and they can ship any of their meat straight to your house.

Find a store you trust

With so many options, find a few sources that you trust that will work for you.

The important thing is that you buy the foods you need to support weight loss...
...and leave the rest behind!
