Getting to know COVID - my story of Bulletproof Immunity

I got COVID. And, despite having a good plan (shared below) in place, I still made some BIG mistakes! In this article I'm sharing my experiences with COVID - from the perspective of a health and wellness researcher and professional.

Is COVID the problem?

On the surface, it seems that COVID is the cause of so many problems in our world today.

However, I'm going to share what I think to be the true problem...and, I think when you read about it, you may agree.

It's true. There are a lot of people around the world getting infected. Of those infected, some are getting sick. And sadly, some people have died.

There's no doubt it's a problem.

But the root of the problem isn't covid...

I believe the root of the problem is the fear and lack of preparation around covid. At least that was my realization and experience when covid finally hit close to home.

Let me explain...

A friend of mine in Chiang Mai got covid.

Because I research this stuff, I offered some recommendations and he took me up on the offer.

That's when I put together a list of medications and supplements to share with him.

And that's when I started to realize:

I wasn't as afraid of covid.

Why?

I was formulating a plan. By offering recommendations to my friend, I was preparing myself.

Then others close to me got covid.

And I wasn't afraid for them. I was confident they would be just fine. And thankfully they recovered.

I got sick too.

I had a headache, sore throat and spent a couple of nights bathing in my own sweat. It must have been covid.

Unfortunately I was staying at a remote ecovillage in southern Thailand so I didn't have access to the supplies I wanted. I mega-dosed on the vitamin C and melatonin I had with me - taking a pill of each almost every hour.

And I started taking my sleep more seriously. At the ecovillage I was having trouble sleeping at night and was spending time awake reading or listening to podcasts. Bad idea. So instead I would listen to guided meditations and fall back asleep.

No more worries about covid.

A week later I went back to Chiang Mai where I was happy to be with family and in a comfortable bed. I made it in time to celebrate Loy Krathong.

We went to an all-you-can-eat German buffet and then another all-you-can-eat Thanksgiving buffet the same week. Those 2 buffets, along with 2+ weeks at the ecovillage was a recipe for zapping my immunity.

I was eating a lot of unhealthy foods I don't typically eat. Breads. Pastas. Soybean oil. Sugar. And wine.

I thought I would be just fine. I thought I'd recovered from COVID. I was letting things slide a bit. My guard was down.

And I paid the price.

I didn't sleep well after Thanksgiving. I was coughing a little bit at night. I awoke wtih a headache and sore throat.

I assumed I was feeling the after-effects of the binge eating and glasses of wine. But two days later I was feeling worse.

So I did a rapid antigen test and found out:

NOW I had covid - for real this time! Doh.

So nearly 2 days into covid symptoms, I went and got the medicine and started taking it.

I experienced relatively mild symptoms - headache, sore throat, cough and body aches - and, with plans to travel to the US in a week, I was assuming a quick recovery (hoping just a few days).

So, when I wasn't feeling better as I got closer to my trip, I was getting a bit worried - and depressed (physically and emotionally).

I still tested positive for covid 9 days after my first symptoms. So I think it's important to keep with the interventions until symptoms go away.

I made some mistakes:

  1. I wrongly assumed I got covid thinking I had natural immunity.
  2. I let my guard down and pigged out on unhealthy foods.
  3. I assumed I would fully recover quickly (and stopped taking many of the meds / supps).

According to my Oura ring, you can see that my body temperature was elevated (and still continues to be elevated as I write this). Measuring your body temperature is a good way to detect illness (and take action!) before you feel sick.

After these lessons learned, here's what I recommend:

Create your own plan for ongoing immunity - for COVID and whatever else comes your way.

Answer these questions:

  1. What are you doing to prevent getting sick?
  2. What will you do when you get sick?

Based on my mistakes and lessons learned, here's my plan going forward:

Bulletproof Immunity

Simple Steps to Increase Your Immunity

...to remain healthy and energized in the face of sickness (especially COVID)!

Prevention:

  1. Stick to a healthy paleo-style (or Bulletproof) diet with nutrient-dense foods.
  2. Add a pinch of high-quality sea salt to your water (or use an electrolyte mix).
  3. Practice Intermittent Fasting (and, in general, if not hungry, don't eat).
  4. Practice breathwork and meditation daily.
  5. Get sun daily - early morning, mid-day and late day.
  6. (Supplement with Vitamins D and K2 in winter months.)
  7. Better than just exercise - move your body throughout the day.
  8. Spend time with people you love.

Intervention (when you get sick):

(Continue with prevention! And add the following...)

And if you want to go further:

  • Monitor your temperature
  • Curcumin
  • Kefir
    • Raw goat milk kefir (from Aden Health shop in Chiang Mai)
  • Blood oxygen (SPO2) monitor

Answer these questions:

  1. What are you doing to prevent getting sick?
  2. What will you do when you get sick?

...and share your answers in the comments!
